Building a Bridge for Merrimack Students

The Issue

Many Merrimack College students in North Andover, MA live in housing across the street at Royal Crest Estates. To travel back and forth by foot, a crosswalk and connecting sidewalks were constructed in 2016 from the college across Route 114 to Royal Crest, and new traffic lights were installed in the area. Route 114 is full of fast-flowing traffic daily, with two double-laned roads where the crosswalk is located. With a long way to walk and minimal protection, the crosswalk is dangerous during the day and even more so at night. Risks of low visibility are prominent in this area as there is minimal lighting at night. This puts a lot of students and any person walking in the area in danger. In 2023, there were 346 total traffic deaths in Massachusetts. At least 69 pedestrians lost their lives in crashes, accounting for approximately 20% of the total. In the US, data for 2022 traffic crashes revealed that 7,522 people were struck and killed while walking that year. Pedestrian fatalities are, and have been on a consistent upward trajectory, and have increased by 68% since 2011. Although the crosswalk was a step forward for safety, the risk of an accident is greatly increasing. To address this issue, I am proposing to construct a walking bridge as a safer form of pedestrian transportation across 114. This will ensure people's safety when crossing this busy and dangerous road.
