Build Stair Lifts at Subway Stations in NYC Near Smaller Residential Areas
The Issue
Every day, so many people are traveling around New York City by Subway, but not everyone can. So many wheelchair users around the city are forced travel with slower methods, such as car, bus, or ambulate because there are barely any accessible subway stations in NYC, and the ones that are accessible are in densely populated areas meaning wheelchair users have to travel a long distance from their neighborhoods to get to the nearest accessible subway station.
If wheelchair users can’t travel far around the city, it means that they might not be able to go to work, get groceries, seek medical attention, or just go outside to places they like. This issue is especially problematic if they live alone or if their family and loved ones are working and are unavailable. If subway stations are accessible for everyone, they can go to far places around NYC alone without having to ask someone to drive them or schedule a Taxi or Uber which costs money.
This is the best time to act because as of 2025, 46.8% of all wheelchair users in NYC are 65 years or older, meaning as time goes on, there will be more older people in wheelchairs that can;t travel alone due to inaccessible transportation methods.
