The Issue
Tulane University’s recent campus-wide restrictions on electric vehicles came from an understandable place: prioritizing pedestrian safety and risk prevention. But the current ban unintentionally limits accessibility and sustainability for many students, staff, and faculty who use e-bikes and scooters responsibly. The issue isn’t the vehicles themselves, it’s the lack of clear infrastructure and guidelines for their safe use. Reckless riding (just like reckless driving) is a behavioral problem, not a technology problem. Most riders operate safely and depend on these vehicles for efficient, sustainable transportation. For some, walking or traditional biking may be easy; for others, distance, health, tight schedules, jobs, or hauling supplies across campus make electric transport not a luxury, but a necessity. A community built on empathy and equity should reflect that diversity of needs, rather than assuming one model of “convenience” fits all. We believe Tulane shares this vision. Many leading universities (MIT, NYU, UCLA) have already implemented designated micromobility zones, regulated storage, certified battery standards, and speed policies that balance safety with accessibility. Tulane now has the opportunity to take the same forward-thinking path, turning a temporary precaution into a long-term, sustainable system that protects everyone. We’re not asking to undo progress; we’re asking to build on it. To channel Tulane’s audacious, innovative spirit into a solution that reflects our shared values of safety, sustainability, and equity. Let’s make Tulane a model for modern, sustainable mobility. One that proves community collaboration always works better than restriction.
