Build public kayak launches on Savannah River at I‑20
The Issue
Living in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) in Georgia, I've always felt a strong attraction to the serene waters of the Savannah River. However, launching a kayak can be quite an ordeal. The lack of accessible public kayak launches forces residents to either cross the canal bridge, managing to haul their equipment down two flights of stairs, or to make the inconvenient drive to North Augusta, South Carolina. This should not be the case for Georgia residents who wish to enjoy the natural beauty that our side of the river offers.
The Savannah River is a pristine escape where residents can connect with nature, stay active, and promote mental well-being. According to the World Health Organization, physical activity, such as kayaking, enhances overall health and reduces the risk of chronic diseases. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can decrease stress and improve mood. By providing easy access to the Savannah River, Columbia and Richmond counties can promote a healthier and more connected community.
Building public kayak launches at the I-20 bridge will not only facilitate recreational activities but also boost local tourism and the economy. As noted in the "Outdoor Recreation Economy Report," outdoor recreation contributes billions to the economy and creates countless jobs. Enhanced water access will attract more residents and visitors, benefiting local businesses such as cafes, transport services, and kayak rental shops.
Such a project supports the environmental and social goals of our community. Launch construction can be done sustainably, incorporating green materials and ensuring minimal disruption to local wildlife.
