Build New Public Tennis Courts in Boulder Now!!!

Build New Public Tennis Courts in Boulder Now!!!
The Issue
Although Boulder, Colorado is home to a vibrant and growing tennis community, we are losing tennis courts at an alarming rate!
Sadly, this is due to both the action and inaction of our elected officials and public servants.
In the past year, Boulder City and County officials have:
- Approved the redevelopment of the Millennium Hotel property by an Atlanta-based developer. As a result, the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center recently closed its 15 courts, including the only indoor courts accessible to the public. This facility on the banks of Boulder Creek had been one of the most beautiful and unique tennis facilities in the country and home to Boulder's largest provider of tennis programs, including the center’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit for junior and wheelchair players. Over five hundred RMTC members are now in search of news places to play.
- Planned, promoted and approved redevelopment of CU South. As a result, the CU South tennis facility will be destroyed at the end of this year. These courts have historically been home to the CU women's tennis team and used by the public for tournaments, leagues and lessons. 2024 saw cancellation of Boulder's Austin Scott Tennis tournament, a 56-year old tradition Boulder.
- Recommended denial (City) and subsequently denied (County) the application for the proposed Tennis Center of the Rockies. This privately funded facility was to be designed for public access on a site that was ZONED for such a purpose.
As the number of tennis players in Boulder grows, Boulder's public servants have been actively eliminating tennis courts, while do nothing to replace them. Boulder's tennis community has been pleading with local officials for YEARS to address this problem before it reached this critical point.
Although the City has finally completed a court study to review the problem, their only semi-concrete plans are to add three additional courts at East Boulder Rec Center sometime next year. Courts are being destroyed NOW and yet the City continues to recommend study upon study rather than acting to solve the problem.
THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.
Tennis is an inclusive sport, a lifetime sport that is enjoyed across socioeconomic and physically-abled lines. Neighboring cities have all found ways to create excellent public facilities. To the contrary, Boulder's government is turning tennis into a country club sport, with private, costly, membership-restricted clubs as the only option for local players. That, or players can make long, carbon-emitting drives to travel to public facilities elsewhere.
The City and County have been instrumental in creating this problem, and now it's time to help resolve it.
Please help us hold our public servants accountable by insisting that they build new tennis courts now!
