Build an Animal Rescue Center in Digha for Safer Beaches and Wildlife Protection
The Issue
Digha’s Growing Animal Crisis and the Cost of Inaction
Digha is the pride of Purba Medinipur and West Bengal’s most visited beach destination. Yet, behind the beautiful hotels and bustling sea beaches lies a severe, unaddressed crisis: the complete lack of animal welfare infrastructure.
Because there is no active animal birth control (ABC) program or government shelter in the area, the populations of street dogs and cats are growing entirely unchecked. This has led to a breaking point for our community.
1. Escallating Cruelty and Neighborhood Conflict Without a system to manage street animals, frustration grows. Just recently, two gentle community dogs that I fed and protected were deliberately and cruelly killed. When there is no authority to handle animal issues, illegal acts of violence and poisonings become common. This cruelty happens right in the open, in a town where thousands of families come to vacation.
2. Zero Emergency Veterinary Care Currently, if a street dog is hit by a tourist vehicle, a community cat is poisoned, or an endangered sea turtle washes ashore injured, there is nowhere to take them. Local feeders and kind citizens are left completely helpless, forced to watch animals die slow, painful deaths on the streets because Digha lacks a dedicated animal hospital or rescue triage unit.
3. A Major Threat to Digha's Tourism and Safety Unvaccinated and unsterilized street animals face starvation, making them vulnerable to diseases like rabies. This directly threatens public safety. Sick animals on the beaches cause fear among tourists, increase the risk of dog bites, and hurt the reputation of local hotels and businesses.
