The Issue

As a devoted angler who is also disabled, fishing has always been more than just a hobby for me; it is a passion that offers both relaxation and a chance to connect with nature. However, accessing the riverbanks near the locks has become a daunting challenge due to large rocks and steep hillsides that make it difficult for individuals like me to reach the water safely and independently.

The joy and tranquility that fishing brings should be available to everyone, regardless of physical ability. Unfortunately, the current lack of accessible fishing areas excludes many, preventing us from enjoying this rewarding activity. This is not just about personal enjoyment; it is about ensuring inclusivity and equal opportunities for all members of our community.

According to the CDC, 26% of adults in the United States live with some form of disability. Many of these individuals, like myself, seek outdoor activities for mental and physical well-being. Fishing, a beloved pastime in our region, should not be limited by physical barriers that make access impossible for those with mobility challenges.

I am urging local authorities, including parks and recreation departments, to invest in creating accessible paths and fishing platforms along the river. This development can include paved pathways, sturdy railings, and designated fishing spots that accommodate wheelchairs and other mobility devices. Implementing these changes will not only support the disabled community but also encourage more inclusive public spaces, promoting healthy, active lifestyles and fostering a sense of community amongst all participants.

We have an opportunity to set an example for other areas by creating inclusive access to natural resources. Let's work together to remove these unnecessary obstacles, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their physical ability, can enjoy the river and all it has to offer. This also provides an opportunity to boost local businesses and county tourism.

Please sign this petition and support the call for accessible fishing areas along our river, enabling everyone to experience the joys of fishing freely and independently.
