Build a specialized playground in Cumberland, MD

Build a specialized playground in Cumberland, MD
The Issue
As a parent of two wonderful children with autism level 3, I have seen firsthand the challenges they face in finding suitable outdoor spaces to play. In Cumberland, MD, there are a few playgrounds, but none that cater specifically to children with autism and other special needs. These children deserve a place where they can safely and comfortably play, grow, and interact with their peers.
A specialized playground for children with autism and special needs would not only provide a safe haven for these children but also offer a place for parents and caregivers to connect and support each other. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1 in 36 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, making this resource necessary and impactful to many families in our community.
We propose a playground equipped with sensory-friendly equipment, such as swings with high backs, quiet areas, and tactile surfaces, alongside fully accessible paths and entryways. With carefully designed elements, this playground can cater to children’s sensory needs and help them develop their social and physical skills in a welcoming environment.
Cumberland, with its strong sense of community and commitment to inclusivity, can be a leading example of how we can support children with special needs. Investing in a specialized playground would not only enrich the lives of children with autism and special needs but also educate children without disabilities about diversity and acceptance.
We urge local government officials, community leaders, and businesses to come together in support of this initiative. By working collectively, we can transform and adapt one of our parks or create a new space dedicated to these incredible children.
