The Issue

In Northwest Portland, there is a vibrant community of skateboarders and BMX riders who, like me, have a deep passion for their sport. Residents of Portland who frequent Wallace Park know it as a welcoming public space for families, friends, and individuals to come together. Yet, amidst all the bustling activities, one vital aspect is missing: a dedicated skatepark for people of all ages.

Building a skatepark at Wallace Park would create a safe, controlled environment where kids and adults can enjoy skateboarding and BMX riding without the worries that come with skating in streets or undesignated areas. According to the Public Health Law Research, accidents related to inappropriately designed skate areas can be prevented by providing designated facilities. A skatepark would not only minimize these risks, but also foster a sense of community and encourage young people to engage in active, outdoor recreation.

Additionally, skateparks have been shown to reduce vandalism, as they offer an engaging and worthwhile activity that deters potential delinquency. These facilities increase foot traffic and therefore enhance the security of public spaces. West Linn, another city in Oregon, experienced decreased incidents of vandalism following the construction of their skatepark.

By adding a skatepark to Wallace Park, we promote inclusivity and offer remarkable benefits to our kids and community members. It gives local skateboarders and BMX riders a home base in their own neighborhood, making them feel valued and listened to.

Through this petition, we hope to raise awareness and garner support for the construction of a skatepark in our beloved Wallace Park. This dream can only become reality with your help and advocacy.

Please sign this petition to bring forth a safe, inclusive, and community-boosting skatepark in Wallace Park. Together, we can recreate our space to meet the passions and needs of Northwest Portland's thriving athletic community.
