The Issue

For many skaters like myself in Shallotte, North Carolina, finding a safe and dedicated place to practice our sport is a relentless challenge. Currently, we have to drive for over 45 minutes to reach the nearest skatepark, which is not only a strain on our time and resources but also disheartening for young and aspiring skaters. Shallotte, with its thriving community and growing population, is in dire need of a local skatepark.

Skateboarding is more than just a sport; it’s a community-builder and a positive outlet for youth. As highlighted by the Tony Hawk Foundation, skateparks are known to improve public health, decrease crime, and foster community pride. The kids and teenagers of Shallotte deserve a space where they can learn and grow while staying safe and active. Moreover, a local skatepark would not only cater to skateboarding enthusiasts but could also be a venue for events, promoting local businesses and tourism.

Let’s consider the facts. According to the Public Skatepark Development Guide, there is a significant lack of skateparks proportional to the number of skateboarders in the U.S. The National Sporting Goods Association reported over 6 million skateboarding participants in the country. With Shallotte's rapid growth, it's crucial to invest in recreational facilities that benefit the whole community.

Actionable solutions are within reach. By allocating a small portion of the town's budget for recreational development, and exploring partnerships with organizations like the Skatepark Project, Shallotte could create a vibrant community hub. Local businesses might also invest or sponsor skatepark features, creating a sense of ownership and partnership between the park and the community.

We urge the decision-makers of Shallotte to recognize the potential benefits of a local skatepark and prioritize its development. Let's come together to provide a safe, inclusive, and inspiring place for our community to thrive through skateboarding.

Please sign this petition to support the development of a skatepark in Shallotte, North Carolina. Together, we can make a difference for our community's future.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share their views through this petition. The Town of Shallotte is aware of the petition regarding interest in a skatepark and appreciates residents engaging in the civic process. As a small town with a population of approximately 5,000 people, community input plays an important role in helping identify ideas and priorities, while also requiring careful consideration of available resources and competing needs. At this time, no decisions have been made related to the development any additional recreational needs in Shallotte. Requests and suggestions of this nature are typically evaluated alongside many other community needs through the Town’s regular planning, budgeting, and public meeting processes. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts directly with Town officials and to participate in public meetings, where comments and ideas can be formally entered into the record and considered as part of future discussions. Thank you again for taking the time to be involved and engaged in our community. Sincerely, Art Dornfeld Town of Shallotte
