The Issue

Growing up, my dad loved to skateboard around Eureka. But back then, like now, there were limited options for skaters, leading him to practice in parking lots and other restricted areas, often getting into trouble. Today, the situation is not much different, and as a skateboarder myself, I face similar challenges. Having a dedicated space to skate legally and safely would transform our community and support a positive outlet for many individuals, young and old alike.

The city of Eureka has seen an increasing interest in skateboarding, scootering, and biking, yet there remains a glaring lack of facilities to accommodate these activities. Currently, skateboarders and other riders are often pushed onto private property or forced to ride in unsafe areas, such as streets or parking lots. This not only puts riders at risk but also poses a liability issue for property owners. Moreover, businesses have restricted skateboarding by stores, further limiting viable spaces for enthusiasts.

Creating a skatepark in Eureka would offer a multitude of benefits. It would provide a safe, designated space for skateboarders, bikers, and scooter riders to enjoy their sport without infringing on private property or posing hazards to themselves and others. A skatepark would also foster a sense of community, encouraging healthy, active lifestyles and reducing juvenile delinquency. Many cities that have invested in skateparks have witnessed a decrease in skateboarding-related complaints from local businesses, proving that these parks offer a win-win solution.

Statistics point to the success of skateparks in engaging youth and supporting local economies. For instance, a study by the Tony Hawk Foundation shows that cities with skateparks see a decrease in juvenile crimes and an increase in youth engagement. Additionally, skateparks attract visitors and can drive tourism revenue, contributing positively to local development.

We urge the Eureka City Council to prioritize the construction of a skatepark. Let’s provide a safe and enjoyable environment for skateboarders and other wheeled-sports enthusiasts, just as other communities have done successfully. Sign this petition to support the creation of a skatepark in Eureka, where skaters, bikers, and families can come together and thrive. Together, we can build a space where everyone can feel welcome and included.
