The Issue

In Ashtabula, OH, there's a growing community of young people and families whose lives could be positively impacted by the simple construction of a skate park. Currently, our city lacks any skating facilities, leaving our teenagers and children with limited options for recreational activities. For many of us, especially the kids, this void means turning to less constructive pursuits out of sheer boredom and lack of engagement.

A skate park would not only serve as an outlet for physical activity but also as a safe space where people of all ages can gather, socialize, and build friendships through a shared passion for skating. Beyond just the sport, it's about community building and creating an environment that reduces the temptation of engaging in criminal activities. Statistics have shown that cities investing in recreational facilities often see a reduction in youth crime rates. For example, a study by the National Recreation and Park Association suggests that youth crime can drop by up to 30% when parks are introduced into communities.

Consider the physical and mental health benefits that a skate park can provide—regular exercise in an enjoyable form will undoubtedly encourage healthier lifestyles among our youth. Moreover, engaging in skating can build confidence, discipline, and even creativity, as skaters often push the boundaries of their skills with new tricks and techniques.

There are successful models of skate parks in similar-sized towns across the country, such as in Claremont, NH and Carbondale, CO, where skate parks have become community staples, drawing in not just locals but also visitors from neighboring areas. These parks have proven to be cost-effective with maintenance, especially when coupled with community-led initiatives to care for the park.

We need the city of Ashtabula to take action and invest in the future of its youth and the overall community well-being. Building a skate park is an actionable step toward fostering an environment of safety, health, and social connectivity.

Sign this petition if you believe in creating a better future for our kids and our community through the construction of a skate park in Ashtabula, OH.

Hello Petition Supporters, A supporter of this petition recently contacted Councilmember Jane Haines-DiGiacomo to share their views. We wanted to pass along the Councilmember’s response, which we hope you find helpful and informative. Response from Councilmember Jane Haines-DiGiacomo: Hello, There have been discussions about a skate park at Walnut beach. Of course, with all considerations, money is a factor. The best way to get something done for a park is to come to a city parks board meeting. I think June's meeting was canceled because I do not see it on the city calendar. You can reach out to the clerk of council to find out when the next meeting is. Sincerely, Jane
