Harrington Bridge, a historical river crossing between Derbyshire and Leicestershire, has been in place for over 200 years. While it holds significant historical value, the bridge was not designed to meet today's demands, resulting in safety concerns and congestion. 

For pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians, the lack of designated pathways on the bridge means sharing the road with motorised traffic. This poses significant risks to all users, especially for those most vulnerable like children, the elderly, or individuals using wheelchairs. Harrington bridge is currently maintained to accommodate vehicles up to 40 tonnes HGV traffic, the numbers of which will likely increase expansion of  multiple industrial sites in the area. Furthermore, the expansion of industry in the area not only will lead to increased traffic flow around the area exacerbating the problem, but also further isolate local residents from employment opportunities. A new traffic free crossing will mean bridging not only geographical but safety gaps that jeopardize the well-being of its community.

A separate bridge specifically tailored to walkers, cyclists, and equestrians would alleviate these concerns while preserving the integrity of Harrington Bridge. Such an initiative would ensure that the historical structure can continue serving its heritage function without compromising the safety of today's users.

Constructing a new bridge offers a viable and realistic solution to enhance the local infrastructure. It would facilitate safer and more efficient mobility across the River Trent, encouraging sustainable modes of transportation while minimizing the potential for accidents. Studies show that dedicated pathways for non-motorised traffic drastically reduce collision rates and improve usability for all residents of Sawley, Castle Donington, Long Eaton, Hemington and the surrounding areas.

Moreover, the addition of this new crossing would support healthier lifestyles by promoting cycling and walking, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and fostering a greener community. It aligns with regional mobility policies, aiming for smarter, safer transit options.
