The issue

As a 34 year-old who recently took up skating, I’ve experienced firsthand the freedom, connection, and health benefits that come with being active outdoors. Skating has not only helped me stay fit, but it’s also given me a sense of community and purpose. These benefits have inspired me to propose a valuable addition to Orewa’s recreational landscape: the construction of a pump track alongside the existing skatepark.

A pump track is a looped course of rollers and banked turns designed for bikes, skateboards, scooters, and other wheeled sports equipment. It’s a dynamic, low-maintenance space that encourages skill development, physical activity, and social connection—accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

We’ve seen the success of a similar project at Whangaparaoa School, where even a small pump track has become a weekend hotspot for families. It’s fostered community spirit, outdoor play, and healthy habits. Now imagine bringing that same energy to Orewa.

A pump track here would transform the area into a vibrant hub where families, youth, and athletes come together. It offers a safe, fun environment for beginners to learn, while reducing congestion in the main skatepark. Younger or less experienced riders would have a dedicated space to build skills and confidence, allowing more advanced users to enjoy the skatepark without interruption. This minimizes the risk of accidents and enhances the experience for everyone.

Adding a pump track would not only promote safety and inclusiveness—it would also encourage more people to be active, get outdoors, and engage with their community. It supports Orewa’s vision of fostering healthy lifestyles and creating accessible, welcoming public spaces.

Beyond health and recreation, a pump track could also have economic benefits. It would attract more families and visitors, supporting local businesses and increasing foot traffic to the area.

This is a small, smart investment with the potential for a big return: stronger community ties, better health outcomes, and a more vibrant public space.

Let’s work together to make it happen. Join me in calling on our local council and community leaders to support the construction of a pump track next to the Orewa Skatepark. Sign the petition and help build a more active, connected Orewa for everyone.
