The Issue

Founded in 1862 as Liberia College, the University of Liberia is one of Africa’s oldest degree-granting institutions. For over 160 years, it has stood as a symbol of national aspiration—educating leaders, professionals, and public servants who have shaped Liberia’s history. Yet today, this proud legacy stands in painful contrast to the reality faced by students and faculty on its campuses.

For more than three decades, the University of Liberia’s campuses have suffered from systemic neglect with little to no sustained maintenance, repairs, or long-term infrastructure investment. What were once spaces of learning and intellectual exchange have deteriorated into environments that actively undermine education. Leaking roofs, crumbling buildings, nonfunctional bathrooms, unreliable electricity, and unsafe classrooms are now the norm rather than the exception.

Imagine attempting to focus on a lecture while rainwater drips onto your desk. Imagine being forced to leave campus because there are no usable sanitary facilities. These are not isolated incidents, they are daily realities for students who are doing everything within their power to pursue an education against impossible odds. These conditions do more than inconvenience students; they erode dignity, compromise health, and place unnecessary barriers in the path of learning and personal growth.

Liberia’s future rests on the shoulders of its youth. Yet we cannot expect young people to drive national development while asking them to learn in conditions that communicate neglect and indifference. A country cannot rise when its flagship university is left to decay. The state of the University of Liberia is not merely an institutional issue, it is a national development crisis.

A new, modern University of Liberia campus is not a luxury. It is an urgent necessity. Liberia must invest in a campus that is safe, climate-resilient, energy-efficient, and designed for 21st-century learning. Such a campus should include functional classrooms, laboratories, libraries, digital infrastructure, accessible sanitation, and spaces that foster innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.

This vision is achievable. Through government leadership, public-private partnerships, and collaboration with international development and education partners, Liberia can mobilize the resources needed to build a sustainable, future-ready university. Importantly, this effort must also include long-term maintenance and management systems to ensure that history does not repeat itself.

Rebuilding the University of Liberia is about more than bricks and mortar. It is about restoring national pride, honoring a historic institution, and affirming our belief in the potential of Liberian youth.

We call on all Liberians at home and in the diaspora along with partners and allies, to stand together and demand better. Sign this petition to advocate for a new, modern campus for the University of Liberia, a place where students can dream boldly, learn with dignity, and help build the future Liberia deserves.

Together, let us transform the University of Liberia into the world-class institution its history, students, and nation demand.
