Build a free skatepark in Manchester
The Issue
In the heart of Manchester, action sports enthusiasts like myself and my friends face a constant struggle to find suitable locations to enjoy our passion without the burden of exorbitant costs or the risk of legal repercussions. The skateboarding community here is vibrant and full of life, yet we find ourselves limited in our options. Currently, the only viable choices we have are Projekts MCR and Greystone, where entry fees at a minimum are £15 for three hours – a cost that many among us simply cannot afford.
The recent decision to enforce bans and impose fines on those who use public spaces in the city center for skating exacerbates our predicament. Both local police and council members have made it clear that these restrictions will not be relaxed, leaving us with no legal space to practice and enjoy our sport. This dire situation has left not only myself but the entire skate community feeling marginalized and facing an uncertain future.
A solution is within reach: a free and accessible skatepark designed specifically for action sports. Such a facility would provide a secure and welcoming environment for skaters, BMX riders, and other action sports athletes, nurturing local talent and promoting a healthy, active lifestyle among youth and adults alike. Cities around the world, and close to Manchester have witnessed the positive impact of community-centered skateparks, driving both local engagement and tourism.
Manchester needs a safe haven for action sports enthusiasts—a place where creativity and athleticism can thrive without the obstacles of cost or legality. By signing this petition, you can help us urge the Manchester City Council and community leaders to prioritize the development of a free skatepark. Let’s come together to support our local sports community, providing future generations with the facilities they deserve. Please sign this petition and help us build a brighter future for Manchester's skaters and action sports enthusiasts.
