BSGE Needs a New Building – Our Students Deserve Better!
The Issue
To: Chancellor Melissa Avilés-Ramos, NYC Schools, and the School Construction Authority
The Baccalaureate School for Global Education (BSGE) is one of NYC’s top-ranked public schools, yet its building is inadequate for a 7 - 12 secondary school, let alone one offering a full college-level curriculum.
BSGE students take only advanced courses, and their achievements are extraordinary:
✔ 100% college acceptance for the Class of 2024
✔ $32.9 million in merit scholarships
✔ Ranked #10 in NY and #106 in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report
✔ #2 in New York for college-level coursework success
✔ 96% of high school cohorts and 100% of middle school cohorts enrolled in advanced coursework
But despite this excellence, BSGE’s outdated and overcrowded facility fails its students every day. The school has 19 sections of students but only 16 classrooms, forcing the library and music room to serve as makeshift classrooms. There is no gym, no auditorium, and only two aging science labs. Cramped hallways create daily bottlenecks, and the lack of space limits the school’s ability to expand and offer more opportunities to students who need them.
This is a matter of equity. BSGE serves a diverse student body, with 50% qualifying for free or reduced lunch and 15% receiving special education services. The majority of students live in Northern Queens, making BSGE a critical option for local families. But without a new building, the school cannot continue to serve students at the level they deserve.
We Demand Action Now!
We call on Chancellor Melissa Avilés-Ramos, the NYC Schools, and the School Construction Authority to immediately prioritize the construction of a new stand-alone school building for BSGE that includes:
✅ Enough classrooms to support current and future students
✅ A gym and auditorium for student development and extracurriculars
✅ Updated science labs to better support STEM education
BSGE students are already achieving at the highest levels—imagine what they could do with facilities that support their full potential.
