Bryan's Law: Holding Hit-and-Run Drivers Fully Accountable
The Issue
On October 16, 2024, Bryan Jackson was walking home from work in Mobile, Alabama when a car struck him.
The driver did not stop! The driver did not call for help! The driver left him to die!
Bryan lay critically injured and alone in a ditch for nearly four hours before anyone could help. During that time, exposure to the elements caused hypothermia, which compounded the trauma from the blunt force impact to his head and other injuries, greatly reducing his chances of survival. Despite the tireless efforts of medical staff, he fought for nine days on life support before passing away on October 25, 2024.
Our family’s heartbreak was compounded by the shocking reality that the driver received only 16 months in jail, or alternatively, would've received two years of probation. This lenient outcome exposes a devastating truth: current Alabama laws fail to hold hit-and-run drivers accountable and do not reflect the severity of this crime.
Hit-and-run incidents are rising nationwide. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2,049 lives were lost to hit-and-run crashes in 2019 alone. In Alabama, too many families are left grieving, while drivers who abandon victims face minimal consequences.
It is time for Bryan’s Law. This legislation would require that any driver who knowingly flees the scene of an accident, resulting in the victim’s death, be charged with murder!
Such a law sends a clear message: abandoning a human being in their time of greatest need is a complete disregard for life, and it will not be tolerated. Jurisdictions with similar laws have seen measurable reductions in hit-and-run incidents, proving that stronger consequences save lives.
We urge Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama State Legislature to act immediately. By passing Bryan’s Law, we honor Bryan’s memory, protect future victims, and ensure that reckless drivers are held fully accountable for their actions.
