One of our campaigners hand wrote a series of heartfelt letters about the closure of Lowewood Museum to Sir Charles Walker M.P., Councillors Cocking and Monaghan and Broxbourne’s Chief Executive and the Director of Finance. He has had a reply from Sir Charles who wrote that “he had conveyed to the Council that the closure decision had caused a great deal of disquiet, particularly amongst those who support and use the Museum.” Sadly he does not appear to be able to offer more to the people who may well have voted for him. Nor does he appear to have considered those people who have donated items to the Museum and who despite the assurances from Broxbourne Borough Council, are understandably worried about what will happen to their donations.
The only other reply received came from the Director of Finance, in which amongst other things the low levels of Museum usage was highlighted. The visitor figures at Lowewood compare favourably with those at Hertford, a much more heavily funded and well staffed Museum. The worth of Lowewood cannot be measured on footfall alone and the Council appear to have totally ignored the educational outreach, the memories boxes and the many thousands of enquiries received regarding family history, famous local people and the history of the many wonderful surviving and demolished buildings of the Borough.
The headline for this post came from an article in the Nursing and Residential Care Magazine, further underlining the worth of Lowewood Museum to the Community.
A COMMUNITY THAT BROXBOURNE BOROUGH COUNCIL CLAIMS TO SERVE!
