Central to Brown University's reckoning with its ties to the African slave trade is the Brown family's involvement & profiting from slavery & industries built by slave labor. Thus, it is long overdue that we unshackle our beloved University from this name that stands for the abominable practice of 400 years of the enslavement of Africans on this continent. We can no longer be connected with the Brown name, especially while positioning ourselves as a beacon of racial equity & social justice here & around the world. We are calling on President Christina Paxson & the Corporation to rebrand the University as Page University, honoring Inman E. Page, a formerly enslaved African & the first black graduate of Brown, Class of 1877. Page was selected by his classmates to give the senior oration & after graduating, he went on to teach & serve as the president of four colleges, opening doors for thousands of black students in Jim Crow America to gain a college education--exemplifying the University's commitment to racial equity & social justice. We call on President Paxson & the Corporation to begin this work this year & complete it no later than 2027, which will mark the 150th anniversary of Page's graduation. Thus, the freshmen who enter in 2023 will be the first class of Page University. We will finally be free & unshackled, ready to begin the next chapter of our history on a clean page.
