Despite the revocation of last year’s exams, the Broward County Public School Board will continue to administer the 2021 International Baccalaureate Programme assessments. This decision affects hundreds of juniors and seniors across Broward County’s four IB schools, as the results of these finals play a large role in determining eligibility for the program’s diploma. Due to the turmoil incited by COVID-19, counties across the west coast and within Florida alike have repealed further plans for spring testing. Nevertheless, Broward County has not upheld the standards set by other IB counties. This petition calls for the cancellation of the May 2021 IB assessments as a necessity of the physical, mental, and academic prosperity of Broward County students.

In contrast to this year’s AP examinations, the IB final assessments are not offered in a socially distanced, online-testing environment. Students will be required to attend multiple in-person exams, despite Broward County’s exceptionally high infection rates regarding COVID-19. Furthermore, a multitude of IB students rely on school transportation, which promotes inflated transmission of the virus. Many families feel rightfully uncomfortable bringing their children to a populated environment, as it could be life-threatening for high-risk loved ones.

The continuation of spring testing would additionally be unbeneficial due to the standardized format of the final exams. As a natural product of the pandemic, the IB curriculum has been stifled by environmental instability, a shortage of teachers, and lower academic performance nationwide. Quarantine has exacerbated mental distress in many highschoolers, decreasing motivation in many students. As one IB teacher at Deerfield Beach High commented, “I'm not sure how much effort will be put into studying for these exams if they are given. Giving the exam is not in the best interest of our students.” Rather than administering the exams, the official International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) permits IB schools to finalize scores utilizing the results of the written Internal Assessments. Instead of replicating what occurred in 2020, however, the Broward County School Board intends to continue the testing process, ultimately harming our students. This petition was endorsed by a group of seniors from Deerfield Beach High School, Boyd Anderson High School, Miramar High School, and Plantation High School, and seeks to represent all concerned IB students and parents within Broward County.
