The Issue

We write to you as members of the Brooklyn Latin Parents' Association, representing the undersigned parents of children enrolled at The Brooklyn Latin School, located within the William Gaynor Campus in Williamsburg. Our school community is composed of approximately 733 students, forming part of a larger campus that serves over 1,500 students across two high schools and a 6-12 school. At Brooklyn Latin, 80% of students identify as members of racial or ethnic minority groups, and 57% of our students are economically disadvantaged, qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch programs.

Like other students of the William Gaynor Campus, our children are hard-working, resilient, and deeply committed to their education. They participate in a rigorous International Baccalaureate curriculum, and the school maintains a 100% graduation rate, with nearly all students completing advanced coursework. Despite these strengths, our community has faced repeated disruptions this month due to emergency evacuations.

Between October 21 and October 29, 2025, The Brooklyn Latin School experienced three separate building evacuations following bomb threats. The first occurred on Tuesday, October 21, when students were evacuated at 8:30 a.m. and relocated to Grand Street Campus, returning only after NYPD clearance at 11:00 a.m.. The second evacuation took place on Friday, October 24, from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m., with students temporarily outside under staff supervision. The third incident happened on Wednesday, October 29, when students and staff evacuated at 8:59 a.m. and re-entered the building by 9:20 a.m.. In each case, the NYPD conducted a full sweep and determined the building was safe before students returned. These incidents have understandably caused concern among families and disrupted the academic and emotional stability of our students.

Our parent community is deeply concerned and increasingly distressed by the recurrence of bomb threats targeting The Brooklyn Latin School. While we are grateful for the NYPD’s swift response and professionalism during each evacuation, families are now asking what concrete steps are being taken to investigate these incidents and prevent future disruptions. These threats not only jeopardize the physical safety of our children but also undermine their emotional well-being and academic continuity. We parents are particularly worried about the cumulative impact on students’ focus, sense of security, and ability to engage meaningfully in their education. We respectfully request a clear update on the status of the investigations, any leads or patterns identified, and what proactive measures—such as increased patrols, surveillance, or coordination with school safety officers—are being implemented to safeguard our campus.

Sincerely,
