The Issue

This petition calls upon the trustees of the British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust to investigate and justify the lack of D/deaf people or hearing allies with fluent British Sign Language in senior management or trustee roles at The British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust.

We the undersigned have concerns about the lack of representation of our community amongst those in senior employed decision-making positions in an organisation that exists to serve our community with programming which is culturally reflective of our lives and language.

We believe it is time for change and for the British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust to move with the times in line with other media organisations and broadcasters serving minorities.

Would it be OK for the Asian Network to be programmed by white people?

Would it be OK for Gay Times magazine to be edited solely by straight CIS people?

Would it be OK for the Women's Hour Radio Show to be presented by men?

We will not continue to accept the argument that it is difficult to find people with the necessary skill set to fill roles at this level. We believe a full investigation into the structural inequalities of the trust and the wider industry are needed to understand why this situation is allowed to continue unquestioned.
