Remove Becher's Brook from Grand National

The Issue

As we all know The Grand National is the most famous horse racing event. This takes place on the racecourse Aintree. This course has some of the most infamous jumps known in British horse racing, one of these being Becher's Brook. Since 1922 to 2016 Becher's Brook has claimed 16 horses, more than any other fence at Aintree. That's 16 deaths too many. No horse should have to die. Originally it was 8ft wide, and 5ft tall, with a landing side 3 ft lower than the take off aside. 1987, Dark Ivy, a popular grey horse, fell at this fence, incurring a broken neck, killing him instantly. 1989, six horses fell including Seeandem (broken neck and was euthanized) and Brown Trix (Drowned). After these deaths Aintree made changes: - Levelled of the sharp sloped ground leading into the brook; - The brook was raised 30 inches and included only 1 inch of water; - Outside running rails were splayed out to allow more room for horses landing wide. It was totally rebuilt in 2005 after an 8 horse pile up on the first circuit in 2004. 2009 it was widened so there was ruin for runners to bypass. Dooneys Gate broke his back in 2011, leading to the remaining contenders being diverted. After this Aintree re-profiled Becher's Brook. The dimentions now include a drop of 10 inches (inside) and 6 inches (outside) and the height of the fence is now 4ft 10 inches. All these changes are not stopping the unnecessary deaths of horses. No matter how much they change this fence, horses still continue to die. The only thing to do is to remove it. Horses will always be in danger of this notorious ' horse-killer' fence.
