All those with Hepatitis C need access to new antivirals.
The Issue
Hepatitis C is affecting around 215,000 people in the UK. It is often called a 'Silent killer.' Deaths from this disease are on the increase. Early treatment would stop the spread of this virus and save millions of pounds for the NHS. According to a recent article in March 2016 the biggest new multimillion investment of the year will be in Hepatitis C treatment. Peter Huskinson, the National Commercial Director of specialised Commissioning in NHS England and Professor Graham Foster of Queen Mary University claim this amazing milestone. The fact is that no one in Kent has so far been treated. Operational Delivery Networks are in place, everything is ready just a few ticks are needed to start delivering effective new direct acting antivirals approved by NICE. But they are being held back by NHS England while claiming that 5 000 people have already been treated and that a further 10 000 will be treated in 2016. Although many in Scotland and Wales have access to the drugs, patients in England have to wait until they are seriously ill before getting treated or until the cost is reduced by the manufacturers.
