Save the Koalas! Stop Development!

The issue

After the devastating bushfires experienced here in Australia this year leading to the death of 80% of our native wildlife, a developer is after the lives of more. The Brisbane City Council has previously rejected the developers application for 415-427 Beckett Road Bridgeman Downs QLD multiple times as it is inappropriate for the area and detrimental to the surrounding environment. This has not discouraged the developer who have taken the fight to court and is expecting to make headway with their project. The area earmarked by the developer was recently designated as a core Koala habitat by the state government, however due to planning regulations (as the development application was lodged prior to this change) it won’t impact the application. If we continue to destroy animal habitats we eventually won’t have anything left to look after. The Koala population in Australia is critically endangered and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) recently estimated that there won’t be any Koalas left in the wild by 2050. Is this the future we want for our world? I implore the Brisbane City Council and the State Government to purchase this land and turn it into a reserve for Koala conservation, as this is the only continuation of the mountains to the mangroves wildlife corridor along Beckett Road. I also urge both council and state government to strengthen planning laws so inappropriate developments such as this cannot proceed in the future. It is our responsibility to look after our environment, if we do not do this, we have failed as a society.

It’s clear that the locals want this land to be preserved. Council have already done well in refusing this application- now they need to finish the job. They have a great opportunity to step up and save this bushland. I would be very disappointed if they negotiate an outcome with the developer on this land. As the local state member for the area, I have campaigned hard to save this land from development. Council now need to step up and use funds from their ‘Bushland Acquisition Program’ to save this land. If the State Government had the ability to call this in, I’d be the first one banging on ministers doors, but unfortunately we don’t, and that’s the formal advice I have from the planning department. I am advised that under section 91 of the Planning Act 2016, the State Planning Minister has the power to call in an application, only if the matter involves, or is likely to involve, a state interest. As the council refused the Beckett Road application for reasons including protection of the natural environment, this addresses the State’s interest in koala habitat under the legislation. In this instance, unfortunately there are no state interests impacted by the development in a manner which would warrant the Minister’s involvement under the planning framework. Council have funds available sitting in an account, raised from the bushland levy charged on everyone’s rates bill. They need to use it to save this land. Regards, Bart
