Bringing Back Catalina Island as a Field Trip Option
Bringing Back Catalina Island as a Field Trip Option
The Issue
Bringing back the Catalina Island field trip as an option for fifth graders in the ABC School District would restore a valuable and memorable experience that students have lost over time. For many years, students had the opportunity to attend this two-night trip, where they could explore marine science, build independence, and create lasting memories with their classmates. It was not only an exciting experience, but also an important part of learning outside the classroom.
This opportunity was originally removed because of a rule stating that only sixth graders were allowed to participate in overnight trips. At the time, this policy limited access to Catalina Island, even though it had been a meaningful experience for students. Now, with sixth grade moving to middle school, fifth graders are once again eligible to participate in overnight trips. This change creates the perfect opportunity to reconsider and bring back Catalina Island as an option.
Currently, students are limited to attending Irvine Ranch for their overnight experience. While Irvine Ranch is still educational and enjoyable, it was originally designed as a shorter trip for sixth graders and does not provide the same depth of experience as Catalina Island. Catalina offers a unique, immersive environment where students can learn about ocean ecosystems, participate in hands-on marine science activities, and experience a level of independence that is difficult to achieve in a traditional setting. These opportunities help students grow academically, socially, and personally.
Rather than limiting all schools to one fixed option, the district should allow each school to choose between Irvine Ranch, Catalina Island Marine Institute, or any other venue of their choosing for their overnight science camp. This would give schools flexibility and allow them to select the experience that best fits their students’ needs. It would also bring back a meaningful tradition while expanding the variety of educational opportunities available.
By supporting this change, the ABC School District can ensure that students continue to benefit from engaging, real-world learning experiences. Bringing back Catalina Island would not only restore an important tradition, but also give future fifth graders the chance to learn, grow, and create unforgettable memories beyond the classroom.
