Bringing a Childcare Centre to Fleming College- Advocating for a better future

Bringing a Childcare Centre to Fleming College- Advocating for a better future
The Issue
We are a group of Early Childhood Education students at Fleming College Sutherland Campus. We are currently advocating for an on-campus childcare centre that will benefit students, staff, and the community. This centre would give students opportunities for hands on learning in semesters one and two, something we are not offered until third semester when we go on evaluated placement. Having this hands on learning from the beginning of our studies would help us better retain and apply information we are learning. This hands on learning would also help us feel more comfortable in placement, which would lead to greater success both there and into our future careers. Not only would this childcare centre benefit ECE students, it would help students and staff who have children and are struggling to find childcare amongst a city full of year long wait lists. This centre would also help us create connections with the community. Fleming and the city of Peterborough would become interconnected, and students would have chances to interact with and create relationships with community members, as well as current educators in the field and other types of support staff (think Five Counties). Overall this childcare centre is full of benefits, and we have statistics that back up that this would be profitable for the college in the long run. To us, there are no negatives to building this space. Use your voice and help us advocate for this childcare centre!
