The Issue

Residents of Smithers and the surrounding Bulkley Valley are being left behind by Canada’s major grocery chains. While Loblaw (No Frills) and Sobeys (Safeway) offer online ordering, curbside pickup, and home delivery services across the country, these essential features remain completely deactivated for our local Smithers stores.

For a community that serves as a major regional hub, the lack of online grocery shopping isn't just an inconvenience—it is an accessibility issue.

Why This Matters to Smithers:

Accessibility & Safety: Seniors, individuals with mobility challenges, immunocompromised residents, and parents with young children rely heavily on contactless grocery options. During harsh northern winters, traveling to and navigating crowded stores can be incredibly difficult or unsafe for vulnerable residents.

Working Families & Commuters: Many residents commute from surrounding areas or work demanding shifts. The ability to order online and quickly pick up groceries would save local families hours of time every week.

Untapped Local Demand: Smithers residents want to support our local Safeway and No Frills locations, but the lack of digital infrastructure is forcing community members to seek alternative arrangements.

Our Goal:

We, the underserved residents of Smithers and the Bulkley Valley, call upon Loblaw Companies Limited and Sobeys Inc. to recognize the distinct needs of our northern hub. We urge corporate leadership to allocate the necessary resources, upgrade storefront technology, and activate online ordering for curbside pickup (PC Express and Voilà) at the Smithers No Frills and Safeway locations.

Turn the services on, and we will use them!
