Bring Ocean Day Spirit to our schools - June 8th

Bring Ocean Day Spirit to our schools - June 8th
The Issue
Our oceans, covering more than 70% of the Earth's surface, are crucial for our survival and prosperity. Humankind has explored less than 5% of it and there's a stark lack of knowledge and misunderstanding about them amongst our youth. Our schools are vital in shaping the minds of future generations and have a responsibility to correct this knowledge gap. Yet, many schools lack a specific focus on this understanding.
This is where Ocean Day comes in: on June 8, the world celebrates the beauty, wealth, and promise of the oceans. This day could serve as the perfect annual opportunity to introduce more oceanic studies in an engaging, interactive manner within the curriculum.
The ocean, home to diverse marine life and wonderous beauty, provides invaluable resources that sustain our planet. Yet, our next generation is not sufficiently aware of the ocean's critical role in our survival. Therefore, we propose that all K-8 schools in the country celebrate Ocean Day— a dedicated day where our children not only learn about the ocean's crucial environmental functions but also about the positive career opportunities in marine studies and ocean exploration.
Studies show that the ocean produces over half of the world's oxygen, absorbs the most carbon, and is a critical source of food and medicine (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). Yet, according to the Ocean Awareness Project, less than 0.5% of the youth are pursuing a career related to ocean study. Ocean Day festivities can become instrumental in inspiring students towards ocean-related professions and generating conscious, knowledgeable adults who appreciate and protect our marine environments.
The Ocean Day event would involve hands-on learning activities including lessons on marine ecology, the impact of oceans on climate, small-scale at-home experiments, and classroom discussions about the pathways to marine careers. By exposing the younger generation to the magnificence and significance of the ocean realm, we can directly contribute to a more sustainable future.
Hence, we call upon our educational authorities to institutionalize Ocean Day in all K-8 schools. Let's inspire the younger generation, cultivate future ocean explorers, and ultimately, make a positive impact on our planet. We urge every concern citizen like you to sign this petition.
