We are writing this petition to advocate for the introduction of an occupational therapist and a full time Rescource Compliance Specialist to our school community. This cause is deeply important to our school community as we have witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by special needs students who lack access to essential occupational therapy services.

All students at Island Village Elementary have been greatly impacted by the absence of an occupational therapist and a full time RCS in our community. Occupational therapy plays a crucial role in helping individuals with disabilities develop and enhance their daily living skills, fine motor skills, sensory integration abilities, and overall independence. Unfortunately, due to limited resources and availability in our area, many special needs students are being denied these vital services.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in 6 children in the United States have one or more developmental disabilities that can affect their daily functioning. These disabilities may include autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sensory processing disorders (SPD), or physical impairments that hinder their ability to perform everyday tasks.

Occupational therapy has proven to be highly effective in improving the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities. Research conducted by The American Journal of Occupational Therapy indicates that early intervention through occupational therapy can lead to significant improvements in social participation, cognitive development, academic performance, and overall well-being among children with special needs.

By bringing an occupational therapist into Island Village Elementary we can ensure that these vulnerable individuals receive the support they need. With access to professional guidance from an occupational therapist trained specifically in addressing developmental challenges faced by children with disabilities or delays; we can empower them towards achieving greater independence and success throughout their lives.
