Bring Mardi Gras Home, Port Arthur!

The Issue

Growing up in Port Arthur, the core of our community spirit was the annual celebration of Mardi Gras on Procter Street. The parades, the music, the camaraderie – it was more than an event; it was a cherished tradition that helped define our town.

I can vividly recall the excitement of the parades – the lively bands, the colorful floats, the thrill of catching beads, Dana Melancon wearing his gear, and the adorable sight of the munchkins on their motorcycles. Mardi Gras on Procter was not just a weekend affair; it was a time when our community came together, indulging in delicious kabobs, savoring funnel cakes, trying alligator bites for the first time, and enjoying crawfish pistolettes. It was a celebration of our identity, our culture, and our pride as the Cajun Capital of Texas.

However, the abrupt disappearance of Mardi Gras from Procter Street left a void in our community. It compelled us to travel to neighboring cities, diluting the essence of what made Port Arthur uniquely Cajun. The loss of this annual tradition is felt deeply, not just in the absence of festivities but in the fractured sense of community spirit.

As Port Arthur gradually transforms and evolves, it's crucial to reclaim our cultural heritage. Mardi Gras on Procter Street is more than a celebration; it's a lifeline for our community. We need this vibrant tradition back to breathe life into our town, to reunite old friends, and to create lasting memories for the next generation.

Our city's motto, "The Cajun Capital of Texas," should not just be a title but a lived reality. Let us come together, sign this petition, and urge our local leaders to restore Mardi Gras on Procter Street. A revitalized Mardi Gras is not just a celebration; it's a commitment to the heart and soul of Port Arthur.
