Bring JJ back to the show Outer Banks

Bring JJ back to the show Outer Banks
The Issue
The character of JJ was killed off in Netflix’s show Outer Banks. While character deaths happen all the time, this one has rocked its audience beyond what is the norm. As a school teacher, I began to wonder why this is. After some reflecting and rewatching the show (I will admit I am a huge fan of the show and in particular JJ) it became clear to me why this was such a devastating and heartbreaking loss for so many, adults and children alike.
JJ is a symbol for so many. He represents someone who has trauma. He had an abusive/absentee father. He did not have a mother. He was homeless. He was poor. He was damaged from his traumatic childhood. Yet through all of that, he did not let that break his spirit. He cared for others deeply and put them above himself. He was loyal and brave. He was the best friend anyone could ask for. He didn’t want money, fame, or lavish luxuries. He wanted only for a place to call home with those he loved and those who loved him. He wanted peace and time with the ‘family’ he never had.
The loss of JJ unfortunately shows the tragic end for many who have been in similar situations (kids of broken homes, history of abuse, disadvantaged, homeless). While this may be the truth in many circumstances, JJ gave those who could relate hope. Hope for a better future. Hope that they matter. Hope that they could be loved. Hope that their life meant something. Hope that things can get better. Hope that being loyal and selfless can result positively. Hope that they are not their past and that they can break the cycle.
I believe that the loss of JJ is bigger than a storyline necessary for a final season. I believe that the ending for JJ should be one that continues to give those who are in similar situations hope. I believe that message is one that our society needs right now especially our children. For them to see a character, that has gone through struggles like their own, succeed and have a happy ending is so powerful. Please do not take that hope away from so many. This hope is so precious to them.
