Bring H-Mart to Larkspur, Marin
The Issue
To H Mart Corporate Real Estate & Development Team,
We, the undersigned residents of Larkspur and greater Marin County, respectfully urge H Mart to open a store in Larkspur, CA.
The Need is REAL Lucky Supermarket closed its doors at 570 Magnolia Ave in April 2023 after 40 years serving our community. This is an opportunity to provide the much desired H Mart to Marin. Downtown Larkspur is ideal as it is both a walkable grocery option but has the existing infrastructure. There is an adjacent community of seniors and lower-income residents who relied on being able to walk to the store rather than drive to Safeway or across town. The storefront at 570 Magnolia Ave sits empty in the heart of downtown — steps from Hall Middle School and Redwood High School, and easily accessible via the SMART train and Larkspur Ferry Terminal — and would make an ideal H Mart location.
Marin's community deeply desires better access to Asian groceries in Marin, NOT OVER A BRIDGE. Roughly 6% of Marin County's population — over 15,000 residents — identifies as Asian, yet the county has no H Mart, no major Asian grocery chain, and only limited specialty options. Marin residents currently have to cross the Golden Gate Bridge to San Francisco or drive to the East Bay for the kind of comprehensive Asian grocery shopping that H Mart offers. That's a real burden for families who want the ingredients that they consider basic groceries on a weekly basis. The commitment of this community to get their groceries is well known. However, there is also a large number of other Marin people who also make this trek because they truly want their weekly supply of Asian ingredients. The new Tokyo Central Market and the large 99 Ranch Market fanbase is testimony to this commitment. Many people in Marin cook Asian food regularly and the increased presence of Asian food dining in Marin is testimony to that preference. In addition, unlike Nijiya Market, there is a much broader awareness of the H Mart brand in Marin because of the bestseller Crying in H Mart. Book Passage, one of the best bookstores in the U.S., is based in Corte Madera.
H Mart is actively investing in the Bay Area right now. H Mart currently operates locations in San Francisco, Dublin (under construction), and two in San Jose, and recently announced its largest U.S. store ever — a 100,000-square-foot flagship — opening in Fremont. This is a company in active Bay Area growth mode. Marin, with its dense, affluent, food-focused population and proximity to San Francisco, is a natural next market that has so far been overlooked.
Larkspur is the right site. With a median household income over $134,000, a highly educated population, and strong foot traffic from the ferry terminal, SMART train, and nearby schools, Larkspur offers exactly the kind of built-in customer base H Mart has succeeded with in other affluent, transit-connected communities. There is a new library next door that is bringing a large amount of food traffic as well. There is a popular pupusa restaurant and other food venues, as well as a gas station, at this site.
We ask H Mart to seriously consider Larkspur — and specifically the former Lucky Supermarket site at 570 Magnolia Ave — for its next Bay Area location. Please help us fill this gap and bring an H Mart to Larkspur.
