Why this petition matters

Started by Heather Bartol

It has come to our attention that as of this year our students are being taught common core math in the classroom. This has raised many concerns and questions about the academic material being presented to OUR children. Many parents have expressed the overwhelming frustration with the inability to assist our children in learning basic math using this process. The administration failed to create a poll or survey to inquire about  parents opinions and concerns in regards to new material being introduced in the classroom. This particular group of parents/guardians feel that this curriculum change is setting our children up for failure, and are asking Legacy to switch back to a more traditional math curriculum before it’s too late. We are signing this petition to REMOVE common core mathematics from the classroom on the basis of:

1. Common Core bares no evidence of practicality.

2. The process is tedious, confusing, and unnecessarily difficult.

3. As parents, we chose Legacy Traditional School because it was just that- traditional. Many parents chose Legacy specifically to avoid common core math offered in other schools.

4. The school’s mission statement states “Legacy Traditional School’s mission is to provide motivated students with the opportunity to achieve academic excellence in an accelerated, BACK-TO-BASICS, safe learning environment taught by caring, knowledgeable, and highly effective educators in cooperation with supportive, involved parents.” Common core is NEW, and INEFFECTIVE as a whole. Supportive parents are now lacking the knowledge and ability to be effectively involved in their child's learning.

5. It’s simply not fair to change the children’s curriculum so drastically part way through their schooling. They should be taught one way from beginning to end. Changing curriculum causes unneeded frustration, confusion, and is a huge disservice to the children. In this case, since a curriculum change was unavoidable, a new traditional curriculum should be selected that is as close as possible to the old curriculum. This would cause the least amount of stress and confusion possible.
