The Issue

Our community has a longstanding love and appreciation for the Weiner dog races at Kennywood Park. Many of us, the petitioners, have enjoyed participating and watching these fun-filled races. This event brings joy, laughter, and a sense of belonging that can't be replicated by any other activity at the park. However, recently we have been disheartened by the decision to discontinue this beloved event.

Historically, the Weiner dog races have not caused any harm or distress to the dogs involved. In fact, Dachshunds were originally bred as hunting dogs to chase down burrows, hence they possess a natural instinct to run and chase, which this event perfectly caters to (American Kennel Club).

Furthermore, this event has always been a major highlight for the park, drawing large crowds and fostering a sense of community spirit. It not only provides entertainment but also raises awareness for rescue organizations and Dachshund health issues, which is an added benefit.

We are appealing to the management of Kennywood Park to consider reinstating the Weiner dog races. This move will not only satiate the fondness of the spectators for these events, but also provide engagement and physical stimulation for these adorable, short-legged furballs, true to their species’ instincts. Let’s bring back our tradition and continue making happy memories at Kennywood Park. Please sign this petition to bring about this change.
