Bring Back the WCU Polling Site

Bring Back the WCU Polling Site
The Issue
In the heart of our community, the Western Carolina University (WCU) campus served as a vital polling site for countless students, faculty, and local residents. Its removal has left a void that many find challenging to navigate, hindering their ability to participate in the democratic process. Through data collected in an anonymous survey, numerous students, faculty, and community members expressed how the closure of this site has adversely affected them and those around them.
Voting is a fundamental right and an essential part of our democracy. Access to polling sites is critical, especially in places like universities where young voters can be encouraged and educated about the importance of their participation. A campus polling site not only provides convenience but also serves as a significant reminder of civic duties.
The removal of the polling station is more than an inconvenience. It erects barriers to voting, particularly for those with limited transportation options. Many students, who are often participating in their first elections, find it daunting to travel off-campus. As a result, the obstacles discourage participation, potentially diminishing voter turnout.
In 2024, the WCU polling site had a student voter turnout of 64%, which contributed significantly to the overall result in Jackson County. This emphasizes the impact and necessity of this location. Bringing it back is not just about restoring convenience; it's about restoring fair access to voting for everyone in our community. Some board members justified the removal on the basis of financial constraints, failing to take into account the thoughts and opinions of WCU and the surrounding community.
We urge the Jackson County Board of Elections to recognize the importance of the WCU polling site and take immediate action to reinstate it. Let's ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to have their voices heard.
Sign this petition to demand the return of the WCU polling site and stand up for accessible voting rights in our community.
