Bring back the rent board - fair rent for all

The Issue

I am writing this petition to express my deep concern regarding the escalating rental prices in the private sector, particularly in light of a recent advert I came across for a one-bedroom flat in my area priced at an exorbitant £1750 per month. The current situation is reaching a point where private landlords have seemingly free rein to set rental rates as they see fit, which is causing undue financial strain on individuals and families alike.

It is evident that the absence of rent control measures has allowed private landlords to arbitrarily determine rental prices, often without justification or consideration for the financial capabilities of tenants. This unfair practice disproportionately affects those who are less affluent and creates a skewed system that benefits the wealthy while burdening those who are already financially disadvantaged.

One alarming aspect of the current legislation is the discrepancy in notice periods for rent increases based on the frequency of rental payments. Tenants who are able to pay their rent once a year, often indicating more financial stability, are granted a more reasonable six-month notice period in the event of a rent increase. On the other hand, tenants who make monthly payments, including those who may struggle with financial constraints, are given only a one-month notice. This disparity perpetuates an unjust system that favours the wealthy and perpetuates inequality.

Therefore, I kindly request your urgent attention and consideration to reintroduce effective rent control measures in the UK. The implementation of such measures would restore balance and fairness to the rental market, preventing private landlords from arbitrarily inflating rental prices without a reasonable and justifiable cause.

By reintroducing rent control, we can create a system that safeguards the rights and well-being of tenants while promoting a more stable and affordable rental market. Rent control should aim to strike a balance between protecting the interests of both tenants and landlords, ensuring that rental prices are reasonable, transparent, and proportionate to the quality and value of the property.

In light of the increasing housing crisis and the hardships faced by many individuals and families, I believe that the reintroduction of private rent control is not only necessary but also vital to building a fair and equitable society. I humbly request your support in advocating for this change and addressing the concerns of countless tenants across the country.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust in your commitment to fostering a just and inclusive society where access to affordable housing is a reality for all.
