Bring back the Dunkin to Montclair State University!
The Issue
Montclair State University should bring Dunkin back to campus because it was one of the most popular and convenient places for students to get coffee, breakfast, and other food throughout the day. A couple of years ago, the university had two Dunkin locations on campus, showing how much demand there was for the brand among students. Since Dunkin was removed, many students have been upset because the available alternatives do not provide the same selection, prices, or convenience. Starbucks on campus can be very overpriced for college students, while Saxbys often has extremely long lines during busy times between classes. Zaro's, which replaced Dunkin, also has a much more limited menu and does not offer the same variety of drinks and breakfast options that Dunkin did. Many students still go to Dunkin locations off campus, which clearly shows that there is still a strong demand for Dunkin within the Montclair State community. The university has explained that the Dunkin franchise expired and that renovating the location would have been too expensive, but there should be consideration of other possibilities such as a smaller location, kiosk, or new franchise agreement. It is frustrating to hear that bringing back a popular student service is too expensive while the university spends significant amounts of money on other projects, including new construction that some students feel primarily benefits one major, while the university president reportedly earns approximately $725,000 per year and has had a house on campus. Bringing Dunkin back would give students another affordable and convenient option, reduce pressure on the existing coffee locations, and show that Montclair State University is willing to listen to what its students actually want.
