The Issue

The abrupt removal of the advanced math and science pathway days before the pathway selection at Farragut High School and Knox County Schools has left hundreds of students stranded, without quality advanced academic options that are important for their future ambitions. Many parents and students were extremely disappointed by this sudden change, as many students were preparing to choose this pathway for the opportunity to enroll in these courses, which are crucial in shaping their solid foundation in STEM fields.

While a wide range of pathways in business and other non-STEM areas are offered, the STEM pathway only offers Engineering, cyber security, and digital design. STEM is far broader, encompassing disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, medicine, data science, and scientific research, yet students interested in these areas are left without a pathway. Now students interested in general STEM are forced into a narrow field that they may not be at all interested in.

With the number of extra classes required in the pathways, students have fewer opportunities to take the advanced classes they want, which the advanced math and science pathway offers.

We are calling on the Farragut High School administration and the Knox County School District to reconsider this decision and work towards reinstating the advanced math and science pathway to help hundreds of students and future students.

This is a crucial pathway, and it is unacceptable to have it suddenly removed less than a week before many students were going to select it.
