Growing up, we hear stories of homecoming dances—an iconic high school tradition, filled with laughter, excitement, and memories that last a lifetime. Yet, as a student at New London-Spicer high-school , my fellow classmates and I are at risk of missing out on this cherished experience. We're not just asking for a dance; we're asking for an opportunity to create lasting memories with our friends and peers before we head out into the world.

The homecoming dance is more than just an evening of music and fun. It’s a chance for students like me to connect with friends outside of the classroom, build school spirit, and foster a sense of community. It’s where we unite in celebration, come together in joy, and express ourselves freely. For many, these dances become highlights in our school careers that we fondly look back on.

However, in recent years, several schools in Minnesota, including ours, have opted to cancel these dances, citing logistical challenges and budget concerns. But I believe that with proper planning and support, we can bring back this event and make it even more spectacular than before. Many schools in neighboring states continue to successfully host homecoming dances through creative solutions like community partnerships, fundraising events, and student-led planning committees.

Imagine a night where students from different grades come together in a beautifully decorated space, where everyone is welcomed and included. It could be a vibrant, safe, and well-organized event that reflects our school community's values and aspirations.

To the school administration, we send this heartfelt plea: reconsider the decision to forgo our homecoming dance. Allow us to plan, participate, and enjoy a high school tradition that connects us to our school's legacy and fuels our excitement for the years to come.
