Bring Back stocked trout streams in Clinton County Section three.

The Issue

The Area’s Fishery Manager (AFM) for Section 3 made the recommendation to the PA Fish and Boat Commission, which they agreed upon, that beginning in 2024, Baker Run, a popular trout stream in Clinton County, will NOT be stocked.

The Area’s Fishery Manager continues to take our trout fishing waters away. Streams such as Long Run, Rauchtown, and this year, Bakers Run are not being stocked. What is next? What will our kids and grandkids have to do to love trout fishing like we did?

The PA Fish and Boat Commission has determined that Bakers Run is a Class A wild trout stream and needs to be protected from stock trout. Clinton County is blessed with many cold-water mountain streams, all or most of which could and will qualify as Class A streams. How is it that Bakers Run has been stocked for over 50 years and it is still a Class A steam? Stocking the stream has apparently not had a negative effect on this fishery, and has grown an entire generation of fisherman.

Special interest groups have gotten involved to protect their trophy trout. How many streams does one group need? How will they have members in the future if we don’t provide opportunities for our kids now?

Section 3 now has a no kill order on wild Brown Trout in the lower section of Fishing Creek. It looks as though Fishing Creek could be next on their list. How are the trout numbers in the top half of Fishing Creek (Narrows) declining since the filtration systems were put in place at the Tylersville Trout hatchery? This filtration system stops the trout from escaping the hatchery.

A report done by the AFM states that wild trout biomass and strong populations of trout (estimated, hence biomass) met the PFBC criteria for a Class A wild trout stream.  If you only sample a small portion of the stream, you may have a few very large fish, which would hit the biomass criteria. That biomass may not be true of the whole stream. There are challenges with only estimating biomass as opposed to taking into account the number of fish.

Trout fishermen, this is for our children and grandchildren!
