Bring Back Snow Days in Academy School District 20 Instead of E-Learning Days

Bring Back Snow Days in Academy School District 20 Instead of E-Learning Days
The Issue
We ask kids to grow up way to fast in the name of efficiency. We often forget how foundational childhood experiences like playing in the snow, going sledding, building a snowman, or helping the older neighbors shovel are to their development. Checking snowdaycalculator.com, flushing ice cubes down the toilet, waiting for a call from 719-234-1200 are great childhood memories. Sadly, this beloved American tradition— snow days—has replaced by E-Learning Days in Academy School District 20.
Here is our ask:
1. Make the first 6 snow days of the year, which are already built into the D20 calendar, traditional snow days for all grades. This will not change the last day of school and will allow kids to be kids on these days.
2. After those 6 snow days, high schools and middle school go to E-learning days so our schools can stay compliant with teaching hours requirements. Elementary would be giving a traditional snow day.
3. Any time the Air Force Academy closes base, D20 follows suit. Last year, one time, D20 had school but the base was closed, this put strains on USAFA Staffing at the gate. If conditions on base are not safe for the military to report, D20 should trust their judgement.
Snow days hold a special place in our childhood memories and have benefits beyond the classroom. They offer a day's respite from the pressures of school life, an unplanned day for teachers and students alike to catch up. They are a source of joy, something everyone looks forward to - emphasizing that life isn’t only about work, it’s about the small things, too.
In addition, on snow days, many high school and middle school kids have to take care of their younger siblings and can't split their attention between schools and giving their siblings proper attention.
Although online learning has value, particularly during these challenging times, we believe it should not replace the simple joys of a snow day entirely. A balance should be struck. Moreover, experts indicate that unstructured play-time in the natural environment strengthens children’s self-confidence and nurtures their well-being (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2012).
Please, let's not deprive our children of these happy, beneficial occurrences. Let us reinstitute snow days in Academy School District 20 while maintaining a balance with E-Learning Days when necessary.
Let us uphold childhood simplicity and joy amidst our fast-paced world. Sign this petition to express your support for bringing back snow days.
