For more than 30 years, Sharkie has been the face of the Sharks.
He isn’t just a logo. He isn’t just a mascot. He is part of who we are.
For generations of supporters, Sharkie has been there through Super Rugby campaigns, Currie Cup triumphs, heartbreaking defeats, and unforgettable days at Kings Park. Children grew up wearing him on their jerseys. Many of us became Sharks supporters because of the identity he represented. When you saw that badge anywhere in the world, you knew it was Durban.
The decision to replace Sharkie with the new SRC badge has left many supporters shocked, disappointed and feeling disconnected from the union we love.
This isn’t about resisting change for the sake of it. Unions evolve, and brands can be refreshed. But great sporting unions don’t abandon the symbols that supporters have spent decades building an emotional connection with.
The Sharks’ identity wasn’t created in a boardroom. It was built by generations of players, supporters, families and the city of Durban. Sharkie became one of the most recognisable symbols in world rugby because the fans embraced him. That kind of loyalty cannot simply be replaced with a new design.
Since the announcement, thousands of supporters have voiced their disappointment across social media. The message has been consistent: Bring Sharkie back.
We are asking Sharks Rugby to listen to its supporters.
Restore Sharkie as the official badge of the Sharks, or work with the fanbase to find a solution that respects the union’s proud history while embracing the future. Our heritage should never be discarded without the supporters who helped create it.
