The Issue

As a 31-year-old, some of my earliest memories involve camping at the Punch Bowl and other picturesque rivers in Horry County, South Carolina. These spots aren't just bodies of water to the locals – they're sacred places where families come together, traditions are formed, and unforgettable memories are created. It’s where communities bond over a shared love for nature and the great outdoors.

However, over the years, responsible camping at these beloved locales has become increasingly difficult due to restrictive regulations. These rules, initially imposed to protect the environment, have unintentionally curtailed the freedom to camp and enjoy the natural beauty responsibly.

Horry County is home to an array of beautiful rivers that are the backbone of family recreation and local tourism. The rivers, including the Waccamaw, Pee Dee, and Little Pee Dee, offer unique ecosystems that deserve preservation while still permitting responsible enjoyment by campers. Rather than blanket bans or excessively rigid rules, a balanced approach can protect the environment while maintaining public access.

Revisiting and revising camping regulations to reflect responsible use is not an impossible task. We can look to communities across the United States where collaboration between environmentalists and local camping enthusiasts has led to practical solutions. For example, implementing a permit system that controls the number of campers but allows for reasonable access can ensure minimal environmental impact. Including community clean-up initiatives and educational programs about respecting nature can further sustain the ecological health of these rivers.

Every year, these historic river areas attract not only local families but visitors from afar, boosting tourism, invigorating local economies, and preserving local traditions. Let’s work together to devise a set of regulations that champion both conservation and community spirit, ensuring that future generations also have the privilege of camping by these beautiful rivers.

Join us in our effort to advocate for rational, responsible camping policies for our rivers. By signing this petition, you are lending your voice to protect the right of families and camping enthusiasts to enjoy the natural splendor of Horry County's rivers responsibly while safeguarding these precious ecosystems.
