Bring back public water fountains
The Issue
In a world where convenience often comes at a cost, it's distressing to notice the gradual disappearance of water fountains from public locations. Reflecting on my early years in the heart of Santa Cruz drinking water was as simple as walking to the nearest public fountain. It was free, accessible, and available to everyone. Today, this simple pleasure seems to have vanished, replaced by costly alternatives such as bottled water, which not only strain our pockets but also wreak havoc on our environment.
Water is a necessity for life, an indispensable resource that should be readily available to everyone, irrespective of their financial standing. But why has access to something so essential become a privilege? It's time we address this issue head-on and demand a change that resurrects the accessibility of water for everyone.
The importance of water cannot be overstated. According to the World Health Organization, adequate water consumption is vital for maintaining health, aiding digestion, regulating body temperature, and preventing dehydration. Yet, with the removal of water fountains, many people, especially those who are homeless or living on a low income, struggle to stay hydrated throughout the day.
Moreover, the environmental implications of relying on bottled water are staggering. The production of plastic bottles consumes large amounts of fossil fuels, and many of these bottles end up in landfills, contributing to pollution and environmental degradation. In contrast, public water fountains offer a sustainable alternative, helping to reduce waste and carbon footprints.
By reintroducing water fountains in public locations such as parks, shopping centers, and transit stations, we can take a significant step towards ensuring everyone has access to clean, fresh, and free drinking water. This move will not only promote public health but also support environmental sustainability.
Join me in calling on local governments to make the reinstatement of public water fountains a priority. Together, we can advocate for the installation of new, modern, and hygienic water fountains that serve communities and foster a healthier, eco-friendly future.
Sign this petition today to help bring back water fountains to our public spaces and make clean water accessible once more to all.
