Bring back phones in Kellogg middle

Bring back phones in Kellogg middle
The Issue
Hey Kellogg middle staff and admin,
We’re writing this as students who really care about our school and want to be heard. We understand that phones can be a distraction in class — and we totally respect that. But we think the recent decision to ban phone use even during lunch and passing periods is unfair and unnecessary.
We’re asking you to please bring back the old rule that allowed us to use our phones during non-class time — lunch and passing — as long as it’s done respectfully.
Why This Matters to Us:
• Communication: Some of us need to check in with our families, whether it’s about rides, responsibilities at home, or just to feel connected during a tough day.
• Mental Health: School can be stressful. Those quick moments to listen to music, text a friend, or watch something funny help us reset and get through the day.
• Staying Organized: We use our phones to check assignments, look at schedules, set reminders, and keep track of our day. It’s how we manage our lives.
• Fairness: Not being allowed to use phones at all, while some students still do it secretly, just makes the rule feel unfair. It creates tension and doesn't really solve anything.
We’re not trying to make school a place to scroll all day — we just want our own time back. Lunch and passing periods aren’t class time. That’s our personal time, and we believe we should be trusted to use it responsibly.
What We’re Asking For:
• Phones allowed during lunch and passing periods only
• Use must be respectful (no filming others, no loud music, no causing issues)
• Still no phones in class unless a teacher allows it
• Clear consequences for people who misuse it
We’re willing to follow the rules — we just want rules that make sense and treat us like the responsible people we’re trying to be.
Please consider bringing this rule back. Let’s make school a place where we feel trusted and supported, not punished during our free time.
Thanks for listening.
