The Issue

Pennyworth is by far one of the best origin stories told in the Batman DC Universe. Alfred's story has never been told, and by learning his backstory we can better understand the depth of the influence he had on young Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Each character's internal and external battle in Pennyworth defines them, and by filling out each one we gain not only insight, but also empathy for them. Since we've only previously been introduced to Thomas and Martha Wayne through Bruce's eyes and the impact their tragic murders had on defining his life, it's fascinating to have the opportunity to learn who they were as people before they were Bruce's parents.

Alfred was always a supporting character to Bruce Wayne, presented as his butler and caretaker. The impression they gave us that his life was solely an act of servitude to the Waynes, made it easy to not give a second thought as to who Alfred Pennyworth, the person, really is.

The acting is phenomenal, the progression of the stories is compelling, and the anticipation in getting to see how this history ties into the iconic Batman universe is exciting! We know how Alfred ends up, but seeing how he gets there is both fun and illuminating.

Thank you for the brilliant performances! @JackBannon, @BenAldridge, @EmmaPaetz, @PalomaFaith, @DorothyAtkinson, @RyanFletcher, @HarrietSlater, @PollyWalker, @SimonManyonda, @RamonTikaram

If you haven't seen Pennyworth, please check it out on HBO Max. And if you have seen the series, then you know! Please sign this petition and let's bring back this amazing series!

Thank you to creator Bruno Heller, executive producers Matthew Patnick, Danny Cannon, and John Stephens, along with DC Comics and Warner Bros. Television.
