The Issue

On February 12th, 2026, the Ontario Government announced that the Ontario Student Assistance Program funding model would change, limiting grants to 25% and increasing total loans to 75% for students across Ontario.

Students, parents, and community members have made it clear. These changes will negatively impact people's ability to pursue further education. These changes will affect entire generations. Research shows that post-secondary education is a key driving force behind economic growth, adding billions to the economy, boosting spending power, and increasing productivity. In a time where unemployment, economic insecurity, and the cost of living are on the rise, there is no doubt that increasing the cost of education is the last thing Ontarians need to address the issues that we face.

We, the undersigned, students, community members, and Ontarians, are calling on the government to act on the following:

  1. Fully reverse the changes made to OSAP's funding model, restoring the grants-based model for all students
  2. Engage in greater transparency and accountability surrounding education-related decisions, including how and why OSAP is being impacted and integrating meaningful community consultation regarding education in Ontario
  3. Re-invest in Ontario colleges and universities to empower them to provide world-class education and training, matching investments made by other provinces/territories into the future of Canada's youth

Ontario is at a crossroads with its education system. Access to education is critical and these changes will be a deterrance for students pursuing education. These demands are aimed at removing barriers to education and respond to the crisis developing in Ontario's colleges and universities.
