In 2023, the Labour Government made the decision to remove Level 1 Media Studies from the New Zealand NCEA curriculum. Since then the option of media studies has been removed for students who are studying NCEA level one in 2024.

We believe that the removal of Media Studies is not beneficial in closing the gap of knowledge of media literacy in a world where the media has a huge prevalence in our lives. Even our teacher disagrees with this change and has made an effort to try and include media in our studies.

After a year of this change being implemented, many students at our school are unsatisfied. This subject is important because while technology advances, we need to teach future generations the importance of correctly understanding and interacting with media.
